They’re, Like, Way Ahead of the Linguistic... →
Researchers say young women deserve credit for pioneering vocal trends, including the latest, known as vocal fry. Not surprisingly, gadflies in cyberspace were quick to pounce on the study — or, more specifically, on the girls and women who are frying their words. “Are they trying to sound like Kesha or Britney Spears?” teased The Huffington Post, naming two pop stars who employ vocal fry while...

Erratic M.I.N.I.O.N.s
Sorry to any who feel abandoned, I’ve been doing a lot to try to get stuff in order…so this blog may be a bit random and impersonal for a while. I’m not gone…so much as erratic.

Santorum flunks the history of home-schooling -... →
At the Republican debate Wednesday night, Rick Santorum repeated a claim he’s been making, that the federal government, and the state governments, should “get out of the education business.” Last weekend, Santorum declared public education “anachronistic.” If elected, he would home-school his children in the White House, just like – he claimed – most presidents did in the first 150 years of our...

M.I.N.I.O.N. is down for a bit...
…took a half-day off work today because my neck and back and shoulder felt so bad. Did something nasty to the muscles. Crick in the neck. Knot in the back by the shoulder blade. Ibuprofen. Heat. Massage. Still hurts. Anywho, gonna be offline for a bit, I think. I hope this goes away before Saturday’s show because I really want to see the Queers.

Palindromic day if you're a DDMMYYYY person:...
Doesn’t work for Americans: 02-21-2012 Nor does it work for time-stamp format: 2012-02-21 Or, if we read it as base-3, that’s 5,324 in decimal.

Happy Friendship 7 Day!
subtlefire submitted:  Have an interview with John Glenn. (Needless to say, he’s not chuffed about the current state of things.) ————- Angwe says: For reference, John Glenn, Marine fighter pilot, member of the original Mercury 7 astronaut group, first American to complete an orbit of the Earth (today, in Friendship 7, 50 years ago) and third American in space...

Read this before you make comments about religion,...
Angwe says: Top-posting because I haven’t run into atheists who are stupid enough to believe that atheism somehow erases their privilege, thank a being or the universe as you are so inclined, but the religion-bashing is something that annoys me, so I’m reblogging mostly for the points about that. The invention of the heterosexual →
In case you wanted an intense scholarly look at the subject: The Invention of Heterosexuality   Jonathan Ned Katz   University of Chicago Press, 2007 978-0-226-42601-3 “Heterosexuality,” assumed to denote a universal sexual and cultural norm, has been largely exempt from critical scrutiny. In this boldly original work, Jonathan Ned Katz challenges the common notion that the distinction...

wayneandwax.com » Is “Africa” “Actually” African? →
Wayne gives us an interesting glimpse into the possibility that Toto’s “Africa” may have an African rhythm (Malian, it would see) even if Toto didn’t know they were doing it.
